Early morning fire destroys family-owned music store in Lee’s Summit
An early morning fire destroyed Shining Light Music, a family-owned music store that touted itself as having one of Kansas City metro’s largest inventories of printed music, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department said Sunday.
A police officer discovered the blaze about 2:25 a.m. Sunday in the music store’s building at 611 S.W. Third Street.
By the time firefighters arrived, the two-story building was engulfed in fire. Because of the amount of fire and a partial collapse of the building, firefighters attacked the blaze from a defensive position outside the building.
The fire was brought under control shortly after 5 a.m.
No one was injured. However, the fire caused heavy damage to the building, with a complete collapse of the roof, fire officials said.
Property inside the business was destroyed. Shining Light Music had recently completed renovating a portion of its building.
The Lee’s Summit Fire Department has requested the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office assist with the investigation into the fire.
Shining Light Music is a family-owned music store that offered private lessons and preschool classes on site. It specialized in retail sales of pianos, guitars, band and orchestra instruments, printed music and accessories, according to the company’s website. It also offered repair services for band, orchestra and string instruments.
The lower level of the store housed one of the “largest, customer accessible, printed music inventories in the Kansas City Metropolitan area,” the company said on its website.
In a Facebook post Sunday, the music store said that it was “with great sadness that we will not be opening for business in the near future.”
Those who took lessons at the store were asked to contact their teachers to work out plans.
“We do not have answers at this time, but we are so grateful for all the love and support we have received from our SLM family and community,” the owners said. “This will not be the end, just a chapter closed.”
