Kansas City man charged in drug deal and robbery that turned into a double homicide

A Kansas City man has been charged in a September 2019 shooting that left two people dead, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday.

Kevin D. Dean, 28, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, attempted robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.

He remains at the Pottawattomie County jail in Iowa, where he was arrested in January on unrelated charges.

On Sept. 10, 2019, Kansas City police responded to a shooting at an apartment in the 7900 block of Manchester Ave.

Dajuan M. Reese and Rance Burton were found dead.

The shooting occurred during a drug deal that became a robbery, according to charging documents.

A witness told police that Dean and Burton went to the apartment. Burton and Reese got into an altercation and Burton was shot in a bedroom.

Then Reese was shot in the dining room by the second robber.

Witnesses said Burton had been with a man known as “40.”

Investigators found a contact listed as “40” in Burton’s phone and determined that Dean was associated with that phone number.

A single photo of Dean was shown to a witness who identified him as “40,” prosecutors said.
