Woman dies after fire at south Kansas City apartment building

A woman in her 60s died early Tuesday when her south Kansas City apartment caught fire, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department said.

The fire was reported about 5:30 a.m. in a ground-floor unit of an apartment building in the 11200 block of Oak Street, said Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the apartment. When they searched the unit, they found the woman in the living room and pulled her out.

The woman was rushed to a hospital, where she later died, Walker said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and has not been determined, but careless smoking has not been ruled out, Walker said.
