Kansas man sentenced to prison for murder of 72-year-old in Independence

A Kansas City, Kansas, man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a 2017 murder, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday.

Xavier Otero, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, burglary and attempted robbery.

On Oct. 30, 2017, Independence police responded to a residence in the 12500 block of East 43rd Street. Officers found a man dead in a bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was identified as 72-year-old William Domann.

Detectives noticed blood on the front porch and the lawn. A trail of blood extended through the backyard and into the woods.

More blood was found inside the residence that didn’t appear to be the victim’s.

The Johnson County Crime Lab notified police in November 2017 that the blood samples matched Otero’s DNA profile.

Nathan Hendricks and Onelio Garcia were also charged in Domann’s death.

Hendricks was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced February 6. .

Court records said Domann’s girlfriend asked him to hide a Corvette from Hendricks, who had stolen the vehicle and wanted it back.

Hendricks had threatened to rough Domann up, the woman told police.
