Kansas City police investigate second homicide of the day Thursday

Kansas City police were investigating the city’s second homicide of the day Thursday after a person was killed outside an apartment complex.

The latest homicide was reported in the 7600 block of Monroe Avenue at East Hills Village Apartments.

According to Capt. David Jackson, a police spokesman, officers received a report of a shooting around 6 p.m., and they found a deceased victim lying on the ground outside one of the buildings. The victim’s identity has not been released, but he is thought to be a young adult.

It was unclear Thursday night if the victim lived at the apartment but police said they were talking to some witnesses who were there when the officers arrived.

Another person at the scene was being treated for an injury caused by shattered glass. Jackson said it did not appear she was involved in the incident.

Several areas were blocked off as police continued investigating Thursday night.

The killing came about an hour after police responded to a triple shooting shortly after 5 p.m. at East 56th Street and Wabash Avenue. The two incidents do not appear to be connected, Jackson said.

Earlier, on Thursday morning, Kansas City police were investigating another homicide where a homeowner shot and killed a person near 83rd Street and The Paseo.

There have been 13 homicides in Kansas City so far this year. There were seven at this time last year. In 2019, there were 151 homicides which neared the city’s record of 155.

Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
