A homeowner shot and killed a person outside his house Thursday morning in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers responded to the homicide about 6 a.m. at a home near 83rd Street and The Paseo, according to the Kansas City Police Department. Some officers had been in the area and heard the gunshots, according to police.

Arriving officers contacted a homeowner who said he heard activity outside his house. He went to investigate and fired several shots at a person who was not supposed to be there, he told police.

One person was found dead outside the home.

The homeowner was cooperating with investigators, police said.

There was no indication of other suspects.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were still processing the scene, police said about 9 a.m.
