Second man charged with murder in Kansas City shooting during Snapchat drug deal
A second man has been charged in the September 2019 homicide of Robiell Avilla in Kansas City, Jackson County prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Damarco Watkins, 21, of Independence is charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with second-degree murder, robbery, assault, unlawful use of a firearm and three counts of armed criminal action.
He is accused in an alleged drug robbery and shooting that left 20-year-old Avilla dead and a second person injured, according to the charges.
Another man accused in the incident, Jordan L. White, of Kansas City, was charged earlier this month with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and attempted robbery.
On Sept. 21, police were called to a double shooting at the View High Lake Apartments in the 9800 block of Willow Avenue. Officers initially found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
A third victim, who was not injured, had been in the vehicle when the shooting happened, according to court documents. That person told investigators that the victims had arrived at the apartment complex after using Snapchat to arrange a purchase of marijuana.
A man entered the backseat of the vehicle and robbed him at gunpoint. Then a second suspect began shooting from outside the vehicle, hitting the driver and front passenger.
White was identified from pictures posted on social media, prosecutors said, and then in two photo lineups.
During questioning, White said he had not been to the apartment complex where the shooting took place for several months and asked for an attorney.
Witnesses identified Watkins as the second suspect.
Watkins was in custody Wednesday at the Jackson County jail. Prosecutors requested a $200,000 bond.
