‘Too many victims’: KCPD responds to homicide right after news conference on shooting
A man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting Monday in Kansas City, an hour after a news conference about a shooting the night before that left one person dead and 15 others hurt.
The homicide Monday was reported at an apartment complex in the 8100 block of East 80th Street, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
Officers were called to the area just before 3:30 p.m., and witnesses pointed them to the man, who had apparently been shot. Officers administered aid to him until medical personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead, according to Capt. David Jackson, a police spokesman.
A woman who suffered a gunshot wound to one of her legs was also found. She was taken to a hospital with an injury that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
There was no suspect information as of Monday evening. It remained unclear what led up to the shooting.
A woman who arrived at the crime scene asked another: “Who would do this?”
Detectives asked anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
One scene to the next
News of the homicide came shortly after Kansas City police officials and Mayor Quinton Lucas held a news conference about a shooting Sunday night when a man opened fire on people in line to enter a nightclub.
Both the police department and Lucas posted messages on social media noting the relentless drumbeat of violence. The shootings came hours after many in the city celebrated the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory in the AFC Championship game and pending Super Bowl appearance.
“We’re so frustrated,” read a message on the department’s Twitter account. “This should be a time of celebration in our city, but we’re running from one shooting scene to the next.”
Lucas said he understood the frustration.
“Too many victims over the last 24 hours,” he said.
In September, two men were killed in a shooting at the same apartment complex in the 7900 block of Manchester Avenue. They were 20 and 44, police said.
The fatal shooting Monday marked Kansas City’s 11th homicide of 2020, according to data kept by The Star. By this time last year, which ended with 151 killings, there had been six.
