Man charged with killing his 22-year-old sister at Overland Park home

A 27-year-old man was charged Thursday with premeditated first-degree murder in the death of his sister at an Overland Park home, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s office.

Parker John Mays was arrested Tuesday night in Douglas County after 22-year-old Layne R. Mays was found dead in a home in the 5500 block of West 148th Terrace, according to Overland Park police spokesman John Lacy.

Johnson County prosecutors announced criminal charges against Parker Mays Thursday afternoon and set his bond at $1 million.

Layne Mays’s mother found her body and called police just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Police have not yet said what caused the death. Lacy said Tuesday that the incident appeared to be “domestic in nature.”

Layne Mays studied animal science at Kansas State University, according to a university spokeswoman. She was enrolled at the university through the fall 2019 semester but was not enrolled for the upcoming spring semester.

Mays was an equestrienne, and a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Hunter Seat Equestrian Team at K-State, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Parker Mays is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
