Overland Park police identify 22-year-old woman as homicide victim found dead in home

Overland Park police have identified a 22-year-old woman as the victim in a homicide Tuesday afternoon.

Layne R. Mays, from Overland Park, was found by her mother dead in a home in the 5500 block of 148th Terrace, police said.

Police have not yet said how she died.

One person was arrested in connection with the homicide Tuesday night. Charges have not been filed.

Overland Park police said Tuesday that the incident appeared to be “domestic in nature.”

The home where the woman was found was still being investigated by police Wednesday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-344-8768 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Mays studied animal science at Kansas State University, according to a university spokeswoman. She was enrolled at the university through the fall 2019 semester but was not enrolled for the upcoming spring semester, she said.

Mays was an equestrienne, and a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Hunter Seat Equestrian Team at K-State, according to her LinkedIn profile. Photos posted on the organization’s Facebook page show Mays holding up ribbons with several others at horse shows.
