Family of Leawood homicide victim starts GoFundMe to raise funds for funeral
A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover funeral costs for the victim of a fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Leawood apartment complex Friday night.
Zachary Morrisey, 24, of Kansas City, died at a hospital after being wounded in the shooting at the Leawood at State Line Apartments, near West 138th Street and Kenneth Road. Another person was injured in the shooting.
The organizer of the online fundraising page said Morrisey was taken away too soon and very unexpectedly.
“Our family is scrambling to even get through a day and need some help from our loved ones and friends for funeral services,” the page said.
The Kansas City Metro Squad has been activated to investigate the homicide, said Capt. Brad Robbins, a spokesman for the Leawood Police Department.
There have been no arrests, Robbins said Sunday. No suspect information has been released.
The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Multiple gunshots were heard and two cars were seen leaving the complex immediately after the shooting.
One of the cars showed up at a nearby hospital. Two victims, one being Morrisey, sought treatment for gunshot wounds. Morrisey died of his injuries. The other victim was transferred to a trauma center, police said.
Police have said there is no known threat to any other residents of he apartments. They planned to have extra patrols in the area.
The killing marked the first homicide this year in Leawood.
Convening the Metro Squad is common for smaller agencies like Leawood when a suspect is not taken into custody immediately. It provides experienced investigators to work on crimes throughout the metro area.
Anyone who has information about the shooting or who might have home surveillance video of the homicide is asked to contact the Metro Squad at 913-642-5555, ext. 461, or tips@leawood.org, or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
