Officers responded to a call of multiple shots being fired about 8 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex near West 138th Street and Kenneth Road, according to Capt. Brad Robbins, a spokesman for the Leawood Police Department.
Two cars were seen leaving the area, one of which showed up at Saint Luke’s Community Hospital, about a mile north. Two people inside the car sought treatment for gunshot wounds, Robbins said.
One of the gunshot victims, a male, died of his injuries, Robbins said. He has not been identified.
The fatal shooting was being investigated as a homicide.
The other victim was taken to a regional trauma center, police said.
No suspect information was immediately available. As of Friday night, police had not located the second vehicle that was seen leaving the apartment complex.
In front of Saint Luke’s, police placed yellow crime scene tape around a blue car near the hospital’s emergency door. The car appeared to have been damaged by at least 10 bullets.
Police asked anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
