Metro Squad activated to investigate fatal shooting outside Leawood apartment complex

Leawood police activated the Kansas City Metro Squad Saturday to investigate a shooting that left one man dead and another person injured Friday night.

Use of the Metro Squad, which provides experienced investigators to work on crimes throughout the Kansas City area, is common for small agencies like Leawood when a suspect is not immediately taken into custody said Leawood police spokesman Capt. Brad Robbins.

Robbins said the Leawood Police Department only has six full time detectives. Many, he said, worked through the night on the homicide investigation.

The department has not yet identified a suspect in the shooting which occurred in the parking lot of an apartment building near West 138th Street and Kenneth Road around 8 p.m Friday night.

Multiple gunshots were heard and two cars were seen leaving the complex immediately after the shooting, Robbins said. One car arrived at Saint Luke’s Community Hospital. A blue car near the hospital’s emergency door Friday night appeared to have been damaged by at least 10 bullets.

One person died at the hospital from gunshot wounds. He was identified Saturday as 24-year-old Zachary Morrisey of Kansas City.

The other victim is a resident of the apartment complex, Robbins said in a news release Saturday. The victim is being treated at a local trauma center. Robbins did not know the nature of their injuries.

Extra Leawood police will patrol the area near the apartment to ensure resident safety, the news release said. Police do not believe there is a threat to any of the residents.

The homicide was the first in Leawood this year, police said.
