Up North dispatch: Argentina fans are flocking to this Northland restaurant
Good afternoon, Northland!
I’m Jenna Ebbers, back with your roundup of the biggest Northland stories from the past week.
Today, we’re diving into how a local restaurant is going all out to cheer on Argentina in the team’s World Cup match this week in KC.
Standing in the back patio of her Argentine restaurant watching as the global soccer tournament officially kicked off Thursday afternoon, Isolina de la Vega was surrounded by family.
It was unlike the last time she watched Argentina play in a World Cup four years ago, when she and her husband were still new to the U.S., thousands of miles from their family.
This time, however, she brought Argentina to Kansas City, transforming her restaurant, Los Hornos in Platte County, into a place both local fans and those who have traveled across continents alike can celebrate, chant and sing together while rooting for her home country.
But the best part of it all?
She’ll be enjoying the international event with her parents and two brothers, who traveled nearly 5,000 miles from their homes in northern Argentina to Kansas City, for the event. It’s all been “like a dream,” she said.
“Now I have my family here,” she told Julianna Mejia and me for the story. “So that’s all I need.”
