KC Argentine restaurant goes all out for World Cup, wants fans to join the party

For the owners of an Argentine restaurant in Kansas City’s Northland, the FIFA World Cup coming to town has been “like a dream.”

That’s why Isolina de la Vega and her husband, Dario Jerez Leavy, who moved to the U.S. from Argentina four years ago, are going all out to cheer on their home country during the national team’s match in Kansas City on Tuesday.

But the celebration at Los Hornos, the couple’s restaurant at 10004 NW Executive Hills Blvd., will start two days earlier, beginning with a traditional Argentine party typically thrown a couple of days before a big match, known as Banderazo.

“The idea of this is to say to the player, ‘We are here, you’re not alone, and we are going to do this because we want you to give 100% of what you have,’” de la Vega told The Star.

The party will start at Los Hornos at 5 p.m. Sunday and will feature food, music, drinks and surprises for guests.

And on Tuesday, de la Vega and Jerez Leavy are gearing up to host a watch party at the restaurant, which is decked out in jerseys, flags and lifesize photos of players, to cheer on Argentina as the team takes on Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium at 8 p.m.

“For those who don’t have tickets, we’ll wait for you here,” said de la Vega’s mother, Maria, who traveled from Argentina to be in Kansas City for the match.
