These Kansas City businesses can serve alcohol until 5 a.m. during the World Cup
Some Kansas City bars and restaurants will take advantage of extended late-night hours during the FIFA World Cup after receiving approval from city officials to pour drinks until 5 a.m. for the duration of the soccer festivities in KC and North America.
A city spokesperson said Wednesday that 16 bars and restaurants received approval to extend last call to 5 a.m. from June 11 to July 19. Only restaurants and bars located in so-called entertainment districts — for example, downtown, Westport and 18th & Vine — could apply to stay open until 5 a.m.
Businesses were given a week to apply for approval, and decisions were made swiftly after applications closed at the end of day Monday, June 8.
Applicants already had to be a liquor license holder in good standing, and they had to submit security plans to be reviewed by the Kansas City Police Department. During a city council committee meeting that discussed what extending hours safely might look like, Mayor Quinton Lucas said security plans from businesses could include hiring private security, obtaining security cameras or other measures for mitigating “the risks associated with longer operating hours.”
As usual, bars can open in Missouri at 6 a.m., but if they stay open until 5 a.m., they must be closed for that hour and are not allowed to serve customers alcohol during that closure period, the city said.

- Missie B’s: 805 W. 39th St.
- Beckett’s: 1701 McGee St.

Initially Lucas wasn’t convinced that Kansas City bars and restaurants should be able to extend their hours. When Missouri officials passed a law that would allow local governments to temporarily extend hours of on-premise consumption, Lucas voiced his concerns and said Kansas City would not take part in extended hours. But after discussions with business owners, Lucas softened his stance.
For bars and restaurants not in entertainment districts, owners of those establishments can decide to stay open until 3 a.m. during the World Cup without applying for a special permit.
