Overland Park man, 45, identified as pedestrian killed in crash on I-435 in JoCo

Michael L. Martens, 45, of Overland Park, has been identified as the man killed in a pedestrian crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 435 in Overland Park over the weekend, a police spokesman said Monday.

The crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-435 near Quivira Road, said Officer John Lacy of the Overland Park Police Department.

According to a preliminary investigation, a vehicle was headed north on Interstate 35 and exited to merge onto eastbound I-435. After the vehicle changed lanes to the left, it hit Martens, who was walking westbound in the same lane.

A second vehicle struck Martens, who was lying in the roadway after being struck by the first vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Overland Park Police Department’s traffic unit at 913-890-1437.
