Kansas City got a taste of springtime weather this week, including the severe thunderstorms, baseball-sized hail and tornado warnings. The worst may not be behind us, however. The weather on Friday and Saturday is expected to be nice with temperatures reaching the 60s and 70s, while Sunday could bring rain and flurries of snow.

The weather hasn’t stopped us from meeting up with friends for trivia at a local bar, heading out to a sporting event or an art gallery at one of the city’s museums. Kansas City’s filled with things to do at every moment, and there’s something for everyone.

I’m missing a lot, but here a few things you should keep your eye on in the following week. If there’s something you have your eye on for next week that people should absolutely go to, email jhernandez@kcstar.com.

Kansas City Current’s home opener

Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to town, the Kansas City Current kick off their season and look to redeem themselves from a heartbreaking exit in the 2025 NWSL playoffs. Croix Bethune, Lo’eau LaBonta and Debinha lead the way as the Current host Utah Royals FC at CPKC Stadium on Saturday, March 14.

Tickets start at $57 for the highly anticipated season opener on SeatGeek. The weather should reach into the low 70s around the 3 p.m. kickoff, but be prepared for anything.

Cardi B’s back in Kansas City

Cardi B’s familiar with Kansas City, having been spotted at Town Topic years ago after attending Beyoncé’s concert as a fan. Now she’s coming back as a performer, and you have to wonder if she’ll stop by and pay for everyone’s meals again.

The New York-born hip-hop artist and personality is embarking on her Little Miss Drama Tour, the first arena tour of her career. An outspoken figure with over 160 million followers on social media, her show on Tuesday, March 17, is nearly sold out. New face-value tickets were added for the low price of $253 by the side of the stage on the lower level.

I’m hoping to see you all there. I know this isn’t happening over the weekend, but it’s worth mentioning.

St. Patrick’s Day parades

St. Patrick’s Day is on a Tuesday, but that won’t stop the weekend celebrations.

The annual Snake Saturday parade starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in downtown North Kansas City with a 5K and 1-mile walk. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at 16th and Swift streets, and the festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in between East 18th and 19th Avenues and Howell Street.

North Kansas City will celebrate its 42nd annual Snake Saturday Parade starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14.

Other parades happening this weekend include a warm-up parade in the Brookside neighborhood on Saturday and Martin City’s parade on Sunday before Kansas City hosts its parade on the holiday. Don’t forget to grab some green beer from Kelly’s in Westport after it’s over.

Naka-Kon

I haven’t watched the latest season of the Netflix live adaption of the iconic anime “One Piece,” but I’d bet a lot of attendees at Naka-Kon have — and are also caught up with the anime’s 1,155 episodes so far.

The three-day convention celebrates anime, manga, cosplay, music, fashion, gaming and more, giving fans the opportunity to interact with voice actors from some of their favorite shows and meet up with others who share the same interests. It runs from March 13-15 at the Overland Park Convention Center, and weekend passes cost $70 for adults and $20 for kids. Daily badges are also available, with prices varying on the day you want to attend.

Oscar shorts at the Nelson

The Academy Awards, the biggest award show for actors, directors, producers and their films, airs Sunday, March 15. To get prepared, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is hosting mini-marathons featuring some of the Oscar nominees.

The museum’s screenings of the nominees for animated shorts, documentaries and live action films happen daily from March 13-15. Tickets cost $10 members and $13 for the general public, and here’s when you can see the Oscar-nominated films:

  • Animated shorts: 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. Sunday
  • Live action shorts: 7 p.m. Friday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • Documentary shorts: 4 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
