Trash and recycling pickup delayed Monday in Kansas City due to winter storm
Kansas Citians won’t have put out their rolling bins on top of 4 inches of snow Monday after the city delayed trash and recycling pickup over the weekend’s winter storm.
Addresses with typical Monday pickup will have their waste collected Tuesday, Tuesday pickups on Wednesday, and so on.
Homes with Friday pickups are allowed two extra bags of trash when their turn comes around Saturday, since last Saturday’s pickup was canceled.
Ryan McMonigle, a spokesperson for the city’s public works department, said Monday’s delay was due to dangerous temperatures. Frigid cold is expected to hit the metro Sunday night, and the National Weather Service said black ice was a possibility.
Bulky item pickups are also delayed by one day all week, with the pickups from Saturday, Jan. 24, moved to Saturday, Jan. 31.
What about other KC-area cities?
Pickup in cities outside Kansas City depend on who your waste provider is.
One of the bigger private waste providers in the metro, GFL Environmental, said it would attempt to collect waste Monday. It operates in towns like including Mission, Merriam, Fairway, Roeland Park, Belton and Peculiar. If your trash is not picked up, double the waste will be allowed next week.
As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS and Johnson County municipalities including Olathe and Prairie Village had not announced changes to their trash schedules.
Residents of many cities, like Lee’s Summit and Independence, get their trash and recycling collected by private contractors.
Reach out to your waste collection company to see how the service for your address is affected. In addition, you can check the social media pages of your city and your trash collection company for updated information.
