If you’re throwing the trash out on New Year’s Day, don’t expect it to be picked up by the city that day.

Kansas City observes New Year’s Day as a trash holiday. That means the city doesn’t collect trash and recycling on that day, and pickup is pushed back by one day for the rest of the week.

According to the city website, Thursday’s pickup will take place Friday, Jan. 2. Friday’s pickup will then take place Saturday, Jan. 3.

This will apply to several holidays in 2026. Here are the holidays in 2026 when trash will not be collected:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, Jan. 19 (one day delay for the whole week)
  • President’s Day — Monday, Feb. 16 (one day delay for the whole week)
  • Memorial Day — Monday, May 25 (one day delay for the whole week)
  • Juneteenth — Friday, June 19 (Friday’s collection will take place Saturday, June 20)
  • Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 7 (one day delay for the whole week)
  • Veterans Day — Wednesday, Nov. 11 (trash pickup will be delayed Wednesday through Saturday)
  • Thanksgiving Day — Thursday, Nov. 26 (Thursday collection will take place on Friday, and Friday collection will take place on Saturday)
  • Christmas Day – Friday, Dec. 25 (trash will be delayed Friday through Saturday)

What if I don’t live in Kansas City?

Remember that these dates only apply to Kansas City municipal collection services. If your home apartment complex or neighborhood association contracts with a private waste collection company like WM or GFL, your holiday pickup schedule may vary.

If you don’t live in KCMO, find your area’s trash schedule below:

Many areas surrounding Kansas City also use private trash collection, so neighbors may have different businesses pick up the trash on different days. You can search your address to see if a holiday will disrupt your trash service on most private collectors’ sites.
