Kansas City cancels a day of trash pickup due to winter storm

Trash pickup services within the city limits of Kansas City are cancelled this weekend, as several inches of snow expected to blanket the metro this weekend.

Officials with the city of Kansas City said they have decided to cancel trash and recycling collection services for Saturday, Jan. 24, and will shift those staff members to snow plow operations. Public works spokesperson Ryan McMonigle said in an email this is also to protect trash collection staff from dangerous temperatures.

Trash service was already delayed by a day due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so normal Friday collection was set for Saturday.

To make up for residents whose trash will not be picked up, those with a Friday pickup date can set out two additional bags next week without needing trash tags, McMonigle said. Bulky item pickup appointments will be rescheduled to Friday, Jan. 30.

Are trash services cancelled in Kansas City-area cities?

GFL Environmental, a private trash pickup service that operates in KC-area towns like including Mission, Merriam, Fairway, Roeland Park, Belton and Peculiar, said on social media for residents to put materials curbside on their normal collection day and they will will collect as conditions allow them to.

As of noon Friday, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS and Johnson County municipalities including Olathe, Prairie Village and Overland Park had not announced changes to their trash schedules.

Residents of many cities, like Lee’s Summit and Independence, get their trash and recycling collected by private contractors. Reach out to your waste collection company to see how the service for your address is affected.

In addition, you can check the social media pages of your city and your trash collection company for updated information.
