First big snow of 2026 shatters Kansas City record. How much fell in your area?
Kansas City residents are getting ready to shovel a record amount of snow recorded Saturday.
As of 4 p.m., Kansas City has received 3.6 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. This breaks the all-time daily record for Jan. 24 of 2.2 inches set in 1956, and forecasters say more snow is on the way.
At Kansas City International Airport — the official weather reporting station for the metro — 2.8 inches had fallen as of 12:30 p.m., the weather service reported.
“Light snow is expected to continue through much of the day,” the weather service said. “Snowfall rates are expected to maximize this afternoon, and wane this evening into Sunday morning.”
Snowfall totals recorded varied throughout the Kansas City metro. Independence reported 3.5 inches of snow at 4 p.m., according to a map from the NWS.
In the southern parts of the metro, Belton and Lee’s Summit reported 2. 5 inches and Grandview reported 1.3 inches. In the northern parts, Liberty reported 2 inches and Smithville reported 3.5 inches.
On the Kansas side of the metro, Merriam reported 4 inches of snow, while Prairie Village recorded 1.5 inches. Lenexa reported 2 inches, Olathe reported 3.5 inches and Bonner Springs reported 3 inches.
The last time Kansas City received at least 3.6 inches of snow was Dec. 2, 2025, which also set a daily record.
