Shooting kills 2 men after property dispute in south Kansas City, police say

Update: Police identified the two victims as Damon L. Gully Jr., 17, and Rickey T. Young, 24.

Two men are dead after a shooting Friday in south Kansas City that may have stemmed from a dispute over property, police said.

Officers responded around 9:15 a.m. to the 7400 block of Chestnut Ave on a call about a disturbance. As officers were responding, the call was changed to a shooting, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman.

Responding officers found two men lying in the street suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics with the Kansas City Fire Department responded at the same time as officers. Despite life-saving measures, the paramedics pronounced the two men dead at the scene, DiMartino said in an email.

A preliminary investigation indicates there was a dispute over property just before the two men were struck by gunfire, DiMartino said.

Police have not yet publicly identified the men who died.

Detectives located several witnesses and are searching for surveillance footage in the area. Crime scene personnel are processing the scene for physical evidence.

The killing marks Kansas City’s 136th and 137th homicides this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 146 homicides.

As of early Friday afternoon, there was no one in custody. A homicide investigation is ongoing, DiMartino said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact homicide unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477.
