One man is dead after shooting in a Westport parking lot
A man is dead after a shooting early Sunday in Westport.
Police were already in the area of Westport Road and Mill Street around 2:50 a.m. when they heard gunfire north of the intersection. There, they found a man shot and unresponsive in a restaurant parking lot, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department. Officers provided aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital later. Police said he was an adult, but details about his age were not immediately known. The preliminary investigation shows that the man was in the restaurant parking lot when he got into an altercation with one or more people that led to gunfire. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators looked for witnesses in the area and any evidence that could be related to the shooting, according to Becchina.
Detectives are asking anyone who has information, or was in the area and heard or saw anything, to contact them at 816-234-5043 or anonymously at the TIPS hotline, which is 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted through the TIPS hotline.
This marks Kansas City’s 124th homicide this year compared to 125 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police shootings.
