A bicyclist died three days after he was hospitalized from a hit-and-run crash in Southeast Kansas City, police said.

Officers responded to the collision around 12:20 a.m. Monday near East 29th Street and Brooklyn Avenue in Kansas City’s Key Coalition neighborhood, an incident report said.

A preliminary investigation found that the bicyclist was riding a blue Raleigh bicycle south on Brooklyn Avenue when a driver of a vehicle struck the bicyclist just north of East 29th Street.

The impact caused the bicyclist to be thrown from the bike. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Paramedics transported the bicyclist to a hospital with critical injuries.

No description of the vehicle involved was available.

Hospital staff notified police that the man was pronounced dead just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a police department spokesperson.

The man’s death is Kansas City’s 48th traffic fatality this year, Gonzalez said. At this time last year, the city had recorded 62 traffic deaths.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the anonymous TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.
