Midnight ride turns tragic. Police hunt for driver after KC cyclist badly hurt

Kansas City police are searching for a driver who critically injured a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash early Monday.

Officers responded to the collision around 12:20 a.m. near East 29th Street and Brooklyn Avenue in Kansas City’s Key Coalition neighborhood, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation found that the bicyclist was riding a blue Raleigh bicycle south on Brooklyn when a driver of a vehicle, also headed south, struck the bicyclist just north of 29th Street.

The impact threw the bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, from the bike. The driver of the vehicle left without stopping after the crash, DiMartino said.

The cyclist was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The bicyclist was in critical condition, but was stable, DiMartino said. No description of the vehicle involved was available.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run crash is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
