One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at Penn Valley Park early Friday morning, Kansas City police said.

Police detained four people for further investigation, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said.

Officers were first called to the area of East 19th Street and Walnut Street, about a mile north of the park, on a reported shooting around 3:15 a.m. Just before that, a shooting was also reported at Penn Valley Park.

Police determined the shooting, which involved “several” people, happened at Penn Valley before the victims drove to the other location, Gonzalez said.

Two men and a teenage male were shot and taken to area hospitals for treatment. One of the men was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Police later identified the person killed as Luis Renteria, 19.

The other two victims had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known Friday morning, Gonzalez said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact detectives by calling 816-234-5043 or by calling the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

The killing is the 92nd homicide in Kansas City in 2025, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 81 homicides reported at this time last year.
