Update: Kansas City police identified the victim as 26-year-old Ty’rick D. Henry.

A man was killed and five people were wounded in a shooting near Vine Street in Kansas City early Sunday morning, according to police.

Multiple officers with the Kansas City Police Department stationed near the Historic Jazz District overnight saw several people running from the intersection of 19th Street and Vine Street around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokesperson. As they ran from the area, multiple people could allegedly be heard yelling that someone was armed and firing a gun, Gonzalez said.

Officers ran in the direction of the gunfire and encountered an unresponsive man suffering from gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said. The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders.

As they began to investigate the scene, officers were told that another five people - four men and one woman - had also sustained gunshot wounds and had been taken by private vehicle to a nearby hospital, Gonzalez said.

Officers believe that the shooting followed an escalating disagreement among a large group of people, Gonzalez said. One man has been taken into custody but has not been publicly identified, and Gonzalez said that KCPD detectives are still looking for other potential suspects.

Hours earlier, the 18th and Vine district had been the site of a joyful, energetic celebration of African American culture as Juneteenth KC celebrated its 14th annual Heritage Festival.

The Sunday morning shooting was the 79th homicide reported in Kansas City this year, according to data collected by The Star, and the second of several reported between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

At the same time last year, 72 homicides had been reported in the city, according to Star data.
