Man dies in shooting at Kansas City liquor store, police say
A man died in a shooting at a Kansas City liquor store Monday evening, according to police.
Officers responded around 6 p.m. to Liquor X-Press near 9th Street and Prospect Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a man unresponsive in the liquor store parking lot with gunshot wounds, according to Gonzalez. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was declared deceased, according to Gonzalez.
After speaking with witnesses, officers learned that the deceased was involved in an altercation between another man and a group of customers, which escalated until shots were fired, Gonzalez said. Several other witnesses not involved in the shooting were in the store at the time, Gonzalez said, and were escorted out of the area by police.
Several people have been detained by KCPD for questioning in reference to the shooting, Gonzalez said. While an arrest has not been made as of Monday night, KCPD is not searching for any further suspects, Gonzalez said.
Monday’s shooting was the 51st homicide reported in Kansas City in 2025, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 47 homicides had been reported in the city, according to Star data.
