Three women found dead in a triple shooting Kansas City’s Northland early Sunday
Three women were found dead following a triple shooting at a residence in the Kansas City Northland early Sunday.
Police were called around 12:45 a.m. to a house in the 4100 block of N.W. 65th St. where they found three adult women unresponsive, according to Capt. Jacob Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
Emergency crews arrived and determined the three victims were dead at the scene. Homicide investigators searched the neighborhood for witnesses while crime scene technicians collected and possessed evidence, according to a news release from Becchina. A person has been identified as a person of interest and is believed to known the victims.
Police identified the victims as Jodie Hopcus, 49; Sherri Duncan, 73; and Hailey Hopcus, 24. Details of what led to the shootings were not released Sunday.
Becchina said investigators have identified a person of interest in the killings and that person was in custody. Detectives were working to present results of the investigation to prosecutors for them to determine possible charges.
The victims knew the person in custody, Becchina said. Further details were not released.
Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said Sunday evening that he will hold a press conference to discuss the triple homicide at 10 a.m. Monday at the prosecutor’s office, 415 Third Street, Platte City.
The killings mark the city’s 13th, 14th and 15th homicides of the year. In 2024, there were five killings reported by this time, according to data tracked by The Kansas City Star.
Kansas City has gotten off to a deadly start this year. The number of homicides so far in 2025 is slightly ahead of the number of killings for the same period in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year with 185 homicides. In 2023, there were 13 homicides by this time.
