Kansas City man charged with murder in shooting of teen Thanksgiving weekend
A Kansas City man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a teenage boy over Thanksgiving weekend.
Sean L. Marshall, 42, was charged Monday in Wyandotte County court with second-degree murder, aggravated reckless child endangerment and possession of a firearm by a felon, in connection with the death of 17-year-old Nicholas Blaze Brooks.
Brooks was found dead with a gunshot wound on Nov. 30 in a parked car near the intersection of North Second Street and Quindaro Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas. Officers discovered Brooks’ body when responding to reports of shots fired around 11:20 a.m.
When police attempted to carry out a search warrant at Marshall’s house on Dec. 11, Marshall barricaded himself inside the home, engaging officers in a two-and-a-half-hour standoff.
Marshall was previously convicted of attempted aggravated robbery, according to court records.
Funeral services for Brooks were held Dec. 14 at Highland Park Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kansas. A fundraiser supporting burial costs raised just under $1,600 as of Tuesday afternoon.
Brook’s family described him as a resilient youth with a big heart and a fierce sense of loyalty.
“He knew how to make people laugh, how to give the most heartfelt hugs, and how to stand by his loved ones, no matter the circumstances,” relatives wrote in a tribute shared to the fundraiser page. “He was a bright light in our lives, and the pain of his absence is overwhelming.”
Marshall is being held in the Wyandotte County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond. His next court date has not yet been set.
Brooks’ death was the 23rd homicide reported in Kansas City, Kansas, in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star. By the same time last year, 21 homicides had been reported in the city.
