After a multi-hour standoff with police at a Kansas City, Kansas, home on Wednesday, police have taken a man into custody in connection with the shooting death of a teenager over Thanksgiving weekend.

Nicholas Blaze Brooks, 17, was found dead with a gunshot wound in a parked car near the intersection of North Second Street and Quindaro Boulevard on Nov. 30. Officers with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department responded to the intersection around 11:20 a.m. to reports that someone had been shot.

The suspect in Brooks’ murder was arrested Wednesday at a home near the intersection of McGrew Grove and Quindaro Boulevard, about half a mile from where Brooks’ body was found. KCK police arrived at the house around 6:30 p.m. to carry out a search warrant in connection with Brooks’ death, according to police.

Once he encountered police officers, the suspect barricaded himself inside the house. He emerged around 9 p.m. after several interactions with tactical negotiators, according to police.

The department has not reported that any charges have been filed against the man in custody in connection with the shooting. However, he is also a suspect in several other violent crimes around the Kansas City area, according to police.

The suspect has not been publicly named as of Thursday afternoon.

Brooks’ family described him as empathetic, resilient and courageous, noting that the teen had worked hard to build a joyful life for himself amid mental health challenges.

““His spirit was unbreakable, and his ability to embrace who he was, in spite of everything, was a lesson in courage,” relatives wrote in a heartfelt tribute shared online.

Funeral services for Brooks will be held Dec. 14. A fundraiser supporting Brooks’ funeral expenses, as well as future legal costs, has raised just under $1,200.

Brooks’ death was the 23rd homicide reported in Kansas City, Kansas, in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star. By the same time last year, 21 homicides had been reported in the city.
