The FBI has identified the man shot and killed by an agent who was executing a federal search warrant in a Northland home on Monday.

Ethan Michael Gosch, 34, was fatally shot in the 3000 block of Northwest 73rd Street around 9:30 a.m., a neighbor previously told The Star. The FBI alleges that Gosch had been armed when agents knocked on the door of the home in the Platte Brooke subdivision of Kansas City’s Northland.

After an agent shot Gosch, he was pronounced deceased at the scene, federal authorities said.

Agents who had been tasked with carrying out the warrant on Gosch’s home were members of the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, the agency previously said. An FBI spokeswoman clarified Tuesday that Gosch had not been involved in a sex trafficking investigation, as several news outlets previously reported.

The FBI has not specified what Gosch was armed with or what actions he did or did not take before he was shot. The agency also has not released the name of the agent involved in the shooting, or specified any investigatory or disciplinary actions taken after the fatal shooting.

Gosch’s death was the 138th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police-involved shootings. By the same time last year, 171 homicides had been reported in the city.
