Kansas City woman charged in fatal shooting of man outside his business: Court documents
A Kansas City woman has been charged in the deadly shooting of a man outside of his business last week.
Kandi J. Galaviz, 24, was charged in Jackson County court with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Waleed Marwan Shaban, 34.
Kansas City police responded to a business in the 300 block of East Linwood Boulevard, in the Broadway Gillham neighborhood of Kansas City, around 12:48 p.m. on Nov. 14. Officers discovered Shaban lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to court documents.
A Kansas City Fire Department medic responded to the shooting around 1 p.m. and pronounced Shaban dead at the scene.
Several people witnessed the shooting, including an employee at Shaban’s business, according to court documents. The employee told police that a woman later identified as Galaviz pulled up to the business just before the shooting in a maroon Cadillac.
Galaviz first spoke to the employee, asking him what time his shift ended, because she did not want him “getting caught in this crossfire,” court documents read. The employee then witnessed Galaviz and Shaban arguing, which quickly turned physical. Another witness said they heard Galaviz say, “square up and do something,” as the two argued, court documents state.
Both the employee and the driver of the Cadillac told police that as the argument escalated, Shaban pushed Galaviz to the ground. It was at this point that Galaviz took out a handgun and shot Shaban point-blank, according to court documents.
The driver of the Cadillac told police that he had been driving Galaviz around town to run several errands, and that she had asked to swing by the business so that she could pick up something of hers from another car in the parking lot, according to court documents.
While loading the items between the two cars, Galaviz found that some of the things she was looking for were missing, according to court documents. Police and witnesses believe that the missing items sparked the argument that led to the fatal shooting.
The shooting was also captured on surveillance video from security cameras on the premises of the business where Shaban worked. Police detectives took Galaviz into custody at the scene, according to court documents, and later found a handgun in the drivers’ seat of the Cadillac.
Born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, Waleed Shaban was an entrepreneur with a passion for faith and family, according to an obituary shared online by loved ones.
“Waleed’s smile could light up a village, with his amazing personality to follow,” Shaban’s cousin Ryan Shaban wrote on social media.
Shaban graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University, where he studied electrical engineering. He owned several businesses, with holdings in real estate, construction, insurance and auto sales, according to the obituary.
Shaban, who was extremely proud of his Lebanese heritage, spent much of his time with family and enjoyed playing the piano, according to relatives.
“Waleed enjoyed taking things apart and rebuilding them better than before,” Shaban’s obituary reads. “We won’t be the same without you habibi, but we will try our best.”
Galaviz previously pleaded guilty to stealing in Excelsior Springs municipal court, according to court records. Galaviz is being held on a $250,000 bond, according to court records, and will appear in court at 10 a.m. Nov. 26 for a bond review hearing.
Jackson County officials are currently determining whether Galaviz will be eligible for house arrest.
Shaban’s death was the 136th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star. By the same time last year, 164 homicides had been reported in the city.
