Update: The deceased has been identified as Waleed Shaban, 34.
Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Kansas City’s Broadway Gillham neighborhood Thursday afternoon.
Officers were called to the 300 block of East Linwood Boulevard around 1 p.m. to respond to a reported shooting. As police arrived, people pointed them to a business in the area saying someone had been shot, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department.
A man was found unresponsive in a parking lot suffering from gunshot trauma, she said. He was declared dead at the scene.
A person of interest was found and taken into custody for further questioning, Gonzalez said, noting that investigators were not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting.
Police found two people had been in an argument that escalated to the fatal gunfire. Investigators were looking into the relationship between the two people, as well as any connection to the business, Gonzalez said.
The killing is Kansas City’s 136th homicide in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year, the city recorded 164 killings.
