A Kansas City man has been charged with murder in the shooting of another man in the head earlier this month.

Juan Carlos Hernandez-Alonso, 21, faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Rommel U. Nolasco-Manuelez, 30. Police believe that the two argued before the shooting.

Kansas City police officers responded to reports of shots fired on Aug. 4 around 8:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Drury Avenue, according to KCPD spokesperson Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Responding officers found Nolasco-Manuelez lying in the street with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A witness to the shooting told police detectives that he had been speaking with Hernandez-Alonso outside the homer when Nolasco-Manuelez arrived in a white van and sideswiped Hernandez-Alonso’s black Chevrolet Malibu, according to court documents.

Court documents state that Hernandez-Alonso began shooting at Nolasco-Manuelez’s car immediately after the swipe. He then went down to check on his own car, and the two began arguing beside their vehicles.

As the two argued, witnesses heard a single gunshot, according to court documents. Hernandez-Alonso then left the scene in the Malibu. Hernandez-Alonso later told police that the first three shots had been “to earn respect,” and he shot Nolasco-Manuelez after Nolasco-Manuelez tookn a swing at him, court documents read.

Hernandez-Alonso also told police that he threw the gun into a river near his house after the shooting, according to court documents.

Hernandez-Alonso is not currently eligible for bond. He will next appear in court at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Nolasco-Manuelez’s death was the 122nd homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star. At the same time last year, 148 homicides had been reported in the city, according to Star data.
