One dead in shooting outside Northland Walmart, Kansas City police say
Update: Police identified the victim as 71-year-old Ronald Barnett.
A man was fatally shot outside of a Walmart supercenter in the Northland Wednesday afternoon, according to Kansas City police.
The shooting occurred just before 4:30 p.m. in the 8600 block of N. Boardwalk Avenue, in the parking lot of the Shops at the Boardwalk shopping mall, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson.
The victim was initially listed as critically injured. He was involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect just before he was shot, according to DiMartino.
A person of interest has been taken into custody as police continue to investigate the shooting.
Wednesday’s fatal shooting was the 96th homicide reported in Kansas City this year, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 133 homicides had been reported in the city.
