A man died following a shooting in the 5400 block of Prospect Avenue Friday morning, Kansas City police said.

Officers were called to the area around 4:30 a.m. following a report of shots fired. The call was upgraded to a shooting as the officers were on their way to the scene, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

Police found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, and medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The victim was identified by police as Ernest J. Scott, 45.

Police found several witnesses, and detectives were interviewing them Friday morning to determine what led up to the shooting, DiMartino said.

Anyone with information about the shooting may contact detectives directly by calling 816-234-5043 or by calling the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information submitted anonymously through TIPS.

The killing was the 80th homicide recorded in Kansas City in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. There had been 115 homicides recorded in the city at this point last year.
