An adult and four children were injured in a crash on Blue Ridge Boulevard Monday evening, Kansas City police said.

Police were called to the Interstate 470-Blue Ridge Boulevard interchange around 5:15 p.m. after a Chevrolet Suburban driving south on Blue Ridge Boulevard “at a high rate of speed” hit a Honda Ridgeline pickup that was stopped to make a turn onto the interstate, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

After hitting the Ridgeline, the Suburban went over a median, hit two traffic signals and came to a stop.

The driver of the Suburban and a boy, who was sitting in an unrestrained car seat in the vehicle, suffered critical injuries in the crash and both were hospitalized, according to police. Three other children in the Suburban were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Honda was not injured.

Police said an investigation is ongoing, including to determine if the driver of the Suburban was impaired.
