Police investigate deadly shooting after burning vehicle found on highway ramp in KC

Police are investigating a deadly shooting after a man was found inside a burning vehicle on a Kansas City highway ramp, police said.

Officers responding to a reported shooting around 12:15 a.m. found the vehicle at U.S. 71/Bruce R. Watkins Drive and the on-ramp of 75th Street, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for Kansas City police.

Inside the vehicle was as man who had been shot. Officers attempted to perform First Aid until emergency medical crews arrived. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, she said.

The man was later identified as 35-year-old Shawndele L. Gray.

Detectives were speaking with witnesses and trying to determine what led up to the killing. No suspect information was released.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

The killing is the 136th homicide of the year in Kansas City, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time in 2019, the city had 105 homicides.

Across the entire Kansas City metro area, there have been 195 homicides so far this year.
