Frosted doughnuts with a twist: Chain to open first KC area spot in Johnson County
True to its name, a mochinut is a combination of a frosted American doughnut and mochi, a Japanese rice cake.
The mingling of the two confections makes a fluffy yet chewy pastry baked with rice flour and tapioca starch. It’s coated in frosting — sometimes topped with sprinkles, cookie crumbles or Fruity Pebbles.
And soon, the dessert will be available in Overland Park.
Mochinut hopes to open its first Kansas City area location in November, said Carson St. Clair, real estate agent for Block & Co. The shop is moving into the former Pokelicious site at 7414 W. 119th St. in Rosana Square.
The company has close to 150 locations across the country, and St. Clair said it hopes to open more in the metro soon.
In addition to its hybrid Japanese-American treat, which originated in Hawaii, Mochinut serves ice cream, bubble tea and miniature rice hot dogs (similar to a corn dog).
The shop will sit by Ahaa South Indian Cuisine and Kolaches and Coffee, which opened in May.
