Pastry & coffee shop opens in JoCo near chain competition. Owner says his are better
Gerardo Serrano’s new kolache and coffee shop might be just down the road from chain restaurant Kolache Factory. But he says his fresh-baked delicacies rise above anything else on the market.
Serrano’s restaurant aims to bring the taste of his Czech grandmother’s kitchen to Overland Park.
“We are trying to bring the original flavor of kolaches to the people,” he said. “You will know the difference.”
Kolaches and Coffee, 7214 W 119th St., in Rosana Square, opened May 7. It sells tea, espresso drinks and the stuffed pastries it was named after — as well as empanadas.
Serrano said everything is made in-house from scratch. His kolache fillings range from savory sausage to blueberry, made with all-natural ingredients.
“We want people to enjoy a good cup of coffee with a fresh pastry,” he said. “Good quality and not expensive.”
He and his wife, Gema Roman, have finally made their 15-year-old dream of opening a premier coffee space come true. Originally a civil engineer, Serrano said his job allowed him to travel around the world.
While on trips, sampled the finest coffee from each country and dreamed of creating his own business one day.
Years of caffeine consumption later, Serrano said he’s chosen the perfect source, imported directly from farmers in Colombia, with no additional flavors added.
“It doesn’t have any aftertaste … not acidic,” he said. “You can’t get this anywhere else.”
Serrano said he already has returning customers.
“As soon as people see and know us, I think they are coming back just because we are better,” he said.
Kolaches and Coffee is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays to Saturdays, and Sundays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The store can be reached by phone 913- 343-4410 or by visiting kolachesandcoffee.com.
