Johnson County ice cream shop employing people with disabilities reveals 2nd location
After months of searching for a spot and raising funds, The Golden Scoop has finally found its second location, this one just a few miles from the first.
The Overland Park ice cream shop that employs people with disabilities hopes to open the new location in December in a former McDonald’s at 10460 W. 103rd St.
Owner Amber Schreiber said the shop will look different from the original; the team is planning a drive-thru and hopes to include an outdoor playground for people with a variety of abilities.
“When we were looking at the building, we saw this grassy area … and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, wouldn’t it be cool to have an adaptive playground?” Schreiber said.
Details of the playground have yet to be ironed out, but Schreiber said they’re working with nonprofit Variety KC to create a safe and fun play area for all.
Earlier this year, Golden Scoop announced it was fundraising for a second spot. Schreiber said they just signed a lease and things are marching forward thanks to grants and generous donors.
The Golden Scoop still has about $35,000 left to raise.
Sister team Schreiber and Lindsay Krumbholz opened The Golden Scoop at 9540 Nall Ave. in April 2021. Krumbholz had worked with children with different developmental abilities for close to 20 years as a behavioral therapist.
Unemployment rates for members of the disabled community are high, Schreiber said. The duo opened Golden Scoop aiming to combat the bleak statistics.
With a second spot secured, Schreiber is looking forward to employing about 25 more “super scoopers.”
In addition to its frozen treats — including its mint chocolate chip and cookie dough ice cream — the shop sells espresso drinks, like its cappuccinos and iced caramel lattes.
Two years later, Schreiber said the shop still feeds swarms of customers.
“We didn’t know what to expect when we first opened,” Schreiber said. “But everybody’s been so supportive, so friendly.”
