Kansas woman had abortion before Roe, defends women’s rights

Before Roe v. Wade, Pam Mattox, of Kansas City, Kansas, had an abortion in Washington, D.C. She’s spent her life trying to protect the rights of other women.

Facing an unwanted pregnancy can be a stressful and even life-threatening situation. State laws and controversy around abortion can make finding accurate information, resources and care difficult.

Whether you’re hoping to terminate a pregnancy or undergo childbirth, resources are available for pregnant people in and around Kansas City.

Here’s how to access them:

Abortion law in Kansas and Missouri

Nearly all abortion is banned in Missouri after the state’s trigger ban was enacted after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

In Kansas, abortion is legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. To get an abortion, you have to print and sign this form at least 24 hours before your procedure. You can get an abortion after 22 weeks only if your life or health are in danger — a decision that must be made by a doctor.

Abortion providers in Kansas and Missouri

The following providers offer abortion care as well as other family planning services like birth control consultations and emergency contraception, also known as the “morning after” pill.

Paying for abortion

Many types of private insurance do not cover abortions. Federal money, including Medicaid, can only be used for abortion services in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the pregnant person. Neither Missouri nor Kansas allow Medicaid money to fund abortions beyond those circumstances.

However, many nonprofit organizations exist to help cover the cost of abortions for people who cannot afford them.

“Patients have many options for payment, and we work very closely with them to help them navigate abortion funds,” said Zack Gingrich-Gaylord, the communications director of Trust Women, a clinic in Wichita. “In nearly all cases we are able to find funding for everyone’s procedure. We work with over a dozen national and regional funding organizations.”

Ask your care provider below about payment assistance options before you visit.

Both Kansas and Missouri also have abortion funds, which are nonprofit organizations that help people afford and access abortion care, even if the person needs to travel to a different state to get that care.

Pregnancy assistance and postnatal options

Medical care for pregnant people: Several clinics in Kansas City provide medical care specifically for pregnant people and babies. Here are a few:

WIC: Assistance with food, medical care, breastfeeding and other resources are available to pregnant women and young children in Kansas and Missouri.

Crisis pregnancy centers: These facilities are not medical establishments. Some may provide religiously-oriented counseling in addition to other services like pregnancy tests and STD testing. They do not perform or refer patients for abortion procedures. Pregnancy centers in the area include:

Surrender of an infant: So-called “safe haven” laws exist in all 50 U.S. states. These laws allow parents or guardians to anonymously relinquish infants to responsible locations, and often shield all adults involved from criminal liability for child endangerment. You can read more about Missouri and Kansas’ safe haven laws here.
