Nike store on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza closed a year ago. Is it returning?
Is Nike returning to the Country Club Plaza?
The chain first opened a store at 211 Nichols Road in mid-2017. It promised a “curated product mix, in-store services and both physical and digital Nike experiences for consumers,” all in one location with a Kansas City focus.
It closed last May, and a temporary exhibit, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, recently operated in the space.
But now Nike by Kansas City has submitted a plan to the city to remodel the former Tesla space at 450 Nichols Road.
Nike officials did not comment. A Plaza spokeswoman said there was “nothing to share at this time.”
Tesla closed its Plaza showroom in February 2020 and opened a larger space in south Kansas City.
Amazon 4-Star took out a permit for the space that spring but never opened. According to a March report on Bloomberg, Amazon will close all of its physical bookstores and shops. An Amazon spokeswoman said, “We don’t comment on our future store roadmap.”
In March, the Plaza had about 30 empty spaces, but it has been filling spots with chain stores, fitness operations, local tenants and some short-term leases.
