‘Immersive Van Gogh’ exhibit opens in Kansas City after months of delays

After months of postponing, “Immersive Van Gogh” is finally set to open in Kansas City. The traveling exhibit is set to open April 21 in The Grove building in Zona Rosa.

The show was delayed in November because Lighthouse Immersive — the group behind the production — couldn’t find a suitable venue in town. The same reason was given for February’s delay.

Now, it’s opening almost a year after it was first announced.

The exhibit will include 500,000 cubic feet of projection, 60,600 video frames and 90,000,000 pixels to create a 360-degree walk-through experience of the famous paintings designed for the Kansas City installation.

You’ll see some of Van Gogh’s most renowned works, such as “Self Portrait With Felt Hat,” “The Bedroom in Arles,” “Irises” and “The Starry Night.”

Visitors to the “Immersive Van Gogh” exhibit were able to study the detail in painter Vincent Van Gogh’s work up close in projected images that surround them Thursday during the exhibit’s opening at the Zona Rosa shopping district. The opening of the display was delayed several times but is now open and in Kansas City until July 4.

There will also be a sunflower wall, a textured wall of bright colors aiming to give visitors a feeling of interacting with sunflowers, perfect for photos. Also, 10 booths called “The Chromesthesia Experience” are based on the colors Van Gogh used the most in his paintings.

“Kansas City has a dynamic and thriving arts culture and we’re excited to add Immersive Van Gogh to the city’s expansive arts repertoire,” Svetlana Dvoretsky, producer with “Immersive Van Gogh,” said in a statement.

“We are excited to give the KC community a spectacular show and a venue for future immersive offerings,” Corey Ross, co-producer of the exhibit, added in a statement.

This is the second Van Gogh exhibit to hit Kansas City, as Starlight Theatre hosted “Van Gogh Alive: The Experience,” from Oct. 21 to Jan. 14.

There’s also another touring interactive exhibit on the Country Club Plaza, but this one focuses on Michelangelo’s “Sistine Chapel.”
