What will replace Macy’s in Prairie Village? These businesses could be moving in

Prairie Village’s former Macy’s store may be redeveloped for a grocery store, fitness center and office tenants.

GRI Prairie Village LLC submitted the proposal to the Prairie Village Planning Commission this week. It will be reviewed by the commission at its Oct. 5 meeting.

A transportation study included in the proposal said the “supermarket is assumed to be a relocation of a supermarket tenant from another parcel within the Prairie Village Shopping Center (6950 Mission Road, or “Parcel #2”). Parcel #2, which is also shown in Figure 1, is also proposed to be redeveloped to retail use.”

Plans submitted to the city show the former Macy’s (parcel #1) as well as the current Hen House (parcel #2).

Hen House Market is at 6950 Mission Road. Officials with Balls Food Stores in Kansas City, Kansas, owners of the Hen House Market, didn’t return phone calls or emails.

Officials with First Washington Realty, Maryland-based owners of The Shops of Prairie Village, declined to comment.

The new supermarket would be 42,780 square feet, while the current Hen House is 33,022 square feet, including 14,993 square feet in the basement level.

Onelife Fitness Prairie Village plans a 47,682-square-foot club. If all goes as planned, it will start construction in summer 2022 and hopes to open in late 2022 or early 2023.

The center’s amenities will include an indoor saltwater lap pool and whirlpool; signature Onelife Cardio Cinema; over $1 million in top-of-the-line cardio and strength equipment; boutique studio featuring Les Mills classes, BodyPump, Zumba and more; the Elegant Mind/Body Studio featuring Barre, Hot Yoga and Pilates classes; stadium-style spin studio with Coach by Color bikes; large turf training area; Relax & Recover Studio with HydroMassage; and spa-inspired locker rooms.

It also will have an expansive kids club with a theater and indoor basketball court.

The Virginia-based US Fitness said it will be their first sports club in Kansas. It opened a location in the Power & Light District in 2014 and currently has more than 50 locations.

The third level would be for offices.

Macy’s closed at 4000 W. 71st St. in early 2020. Then in October, First Washington Realty announced plans for a “once-in-a-lifetime” renovation of the building.
