Onelife Fitness opens Sunday in the Power & Light District
The Power & Light District’s new $5 million fitness center is set to open Sunday.
Onelife Fitness took a vacant 34,000-square-foot space at 1261 Main St., above Cosentino's Market Downtown, for its first Midwest location.
The fitness club company was founded in 2009 by brothers Kirk and John Galiani, who have been in the fitness business since 1990 and have multiple clubs under several brands, including Onelife locations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Kansas City’s new Onelife has some of the latest fitness equipment, including TVs built into the cardio machines and a half basketball court.
It also has several group exercise studios and will offer a variety of classes, including Barre Bootcamp (movements inspired by yoga, Pilates and dance), Iron Yoga (yoga incorporating free weights), Mountain Biker (hill heavy spinning class), Pop Star (dance fitness class using pop music and music-video-inspired choreography) and Fight Club (nonstop punches and kicks). It also has a 120-foot artificial-turf area for high-intensity workouts such as pulling a sled or working with a specially design version of a tractor tire.
It also will offer outdoor classes on what is dubbed the Green Roof, a half acre of lawn surrounded by a promenade and benches six stories above Main Street. Outdoor classes could include yoga in the summer with a cooldown from the sprinkler system or a Polar Bear workout class in the winter. Members also can submit ideas for future fitness classes, and they will have access to the Jones rooftop pool and lounge.
“We will change the dynamics from ‘I have to work out’ to ‘I want to work out,’” said partner Bryan Bullock.
Bullock said 1,200 people had already signed up for pre-opening discount memberships. Most of the new members live in other parts of the metro but work downtown. More than 200 parking spaces are available in an adjacent garage for fitness center members and other users. It also will have a corporate fitness and preventive health program.
Membership is $39 a month with a $99 initial enrollment fee, or $49 a month without an enrollment fee.
Onelife has about 45 employees.
“We’ve been able to foster a tremendous team, and we are excited about what we are able to accomplish,” said Bullock, who moved from Washington with his fiancée, Jennifer Frankel, who is Onelife’s fitness director.
Plaza’s California Pizza Kitchen closes Sunday
After more than a decade on the Country Club Plaza, California Pizza Kitchen is closing.
The restaurant, which opened in 2003 in the former Houlihan’s spot at 4743 Pennsylvania Ave., plans to close Sunday, according to a company spokeswoman.
Glenn Stephenson, vice president and division manager for Plaza landlord Highwoods Properties in Kansas City, said in a statement: “We would like to thank California Pizza Kitchen for being a part of the Plaza for many years. … We’ll explore multiple opportunities and announce another exciting and vibrant new option for Kansas City soon.”
