Macy’s will soon close in Prairie Village shopping center
After “careful consideration,” Macy’s said it will close its Prairie Village department store.
A clearance sale will begin soon and run for eight to 12 weeks.
In a statement, Macy’s spokeswoman Julianne Bartosz said, “The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is proud to have served the Prairie Village community over the past 62 years.”
The store has about 60 employees. Employees who are not offered positions at the other area Macy’s stores may be eligible for severance and outplacement resources.
The location at Mission Road and 71st Street operated as the Jones Store for decades before converting to Macy’s in 2006.
Macy’s has area locations at Town Center Plaza in Leawood, Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Summit Fair in Lee’s Summit, Independence Center in Independence, and Metro North Mall in the Northland.
Prairie Village Mayor Eric Mikkelson learned on Monday of the plan to close the store in about 90 days. He said he is in contact with the shopping center’s landlord, First Washington Realty, about future plans for the site.
“There’s a lot of excitement and anticipation for what comes next. It creates opportunities for what is a prime location,” he said. “But at the same it’s bittersweet because it is the end of a long era. Macy’s has had a very beneficial presence in Prairie Village.”
Officials with First Washington Realty couldn’t be reached for comment.
