Doughnut Lounge's fried chicken and doughnuts
Now all three of those locations have abruptly shuttered.
Signs on the doors of the Overland Park and Westport locations say: "We are closed today. Sorry for any inconvenience." The North Kansas City location, which also housed the production facility, no longer has a Doughnut Lounge sign.
The phones have been disconnected, and the company's social media sites are down.
Doughnut Lounge originally opened in late 2015 at 4117 Pennsylvania Ave.
Founder Jake Randall wanted it to be a place that transitions from conversation over artisan doughnuts and coffee in the morning to wine, beer and specialty cocktails at night.
He spent months gutting the Westport spot to convert a longtime retail space to a restaurant. He weathered delays caused by city codes and increasing expenses, but he was buoyed by $27,009 raised through Kickstarter, a crowdfunding platform.
"When I would want to give up, a lot of people in the community said, 'You've got this.' I'm so grateful," he said at the time.
Doughnut Lounge offered classic doughnuts such as glazed and old-fashioned but also signature flavors such as Lucky Charms (cereal milk glaze and cereal bits) and goat cheese (goat cheese custard, root beer glaze and fresh basil). It also had "noduts," described as a "meal in a doughnut."
The restaurant has had its share of publicity. In February, the eatery's DL39 doughnut was featured on the Food Network's Grill Dads program. In July 2016, Joe Jonas and his band DNCE spent a half-hour handing out free doughnuts to hundreds of fans.
Randall later sold some of his doughnuts in local Filling Station cafes and then took on investors to expand.
In 2017, the wholesale production moved to 1250 Burlington St. in North Kansas City. Then in November, a food truck set up shop in front with a new retail shop opening in the building earlier this year. A location also opened at 7926 Santa Fe Drive in downtown Overland Park in January.
Brad Killen, owner of the North Kansas City building, confirmed Doughnut Lounge had moved its production about three weeks ago and closed its retail shop this week.
